Obviously you could practise while he's out to get better with the controls and some of the fancier tricks and moves. But the best advice I could give is to choose a good solid team 3.5*+, and just focus on using the simpler controls until confident with tricks etc. Also try to keep the ball low and don't sprint constantly as you'll tire your players really quickly.
